Dr. Allison Caine is a sociocultural anthropologist. Her research interests are grounded in a desire to understand how transformative ecological changes materialize in the routine practices of everyday lived experience. Her doctoral research (University of Michigan, 2019) was based on two years of immersive fieldwork with Quechua communities in the Cordillera Vilcanota, and investigated how alpaca herders detect the signs of climate change while pasturing their animals on glacier-fed wetlands. Her research combines participant observation and oral histories with spatial and audio analyses of herding practices to provide a holistic understanding of change over time. Her upcoming research investigates how Quechua women construct repertoires of socioecological illness, linking broader ecological shifts to changes in their bodily health and wellbeing. Allison is currently teaching Environmental Studies at Grinnell College.
